Self-Discovery and Embracing Neurodiversity: A Candid Conversation with Carmel Behan

In our latest episode of the Recipes for Success Podcast, Season 1, Episode 5, I had the privilege of sitting down with artist and art therapist, Carmel Behan. Our discussion touched on the deeply personal journey of self-discovery and how we can feel empowered by understanding and embracing that which makes us unique.

Embracing Sensitivity:

Carmel kicked off our conversation by highlighting her unique perspective on sensitivity. She shared that being sensitive is one of her favorite attributes, despite being made to feel otherwise as a child. Therapy has been instrumental to Carmel in embracing her natural sensitivity, and her increased self-awareness through therapy has helped her recognise and understand when she finds herself in a heightened emotional reaction, giving her the space to respond, not just react.

Unpacking ADHD and Autism:

Our discussion then shifted towards two labels that have profoundly impacted Carmel's life: ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and Autism. Carmel demystified these conditions for our listeners, acknowledging that while ADHD is often associated with hyperactivity, it can manifest differently in individuals. In many women or female-presenting individuals, the hyperactivity of ADHD is internal, affecting their thought processes and sensory experiences. Carmel's journey to understanding her own ADHD was a revelation, as she recognised shared experiences with others through TikTok communities.

The Autism Surprise:

Carmel's journey didn't stop at ADHD; she also discovered she was on the autism spectrum. This revelation was a bit unexpected but added depth to her understanding of herself. It explained many of the sensitivities she had grappled with over the years—sensitivities to textures, noises, and various stimuli that had previously gone unexplained. It was a pivotal moment in her self-discovery journey.

Late Diagnosis and Self-Discovery:

Carmel's story sheds light on the challenges faced by many women who go undiagnosed until later in life. Women's ability to mask their neurodivergent traits often leads to delayed recognition. In her mid-30s, Carmel reached a point where she realized her experiences were more complex than mere anxiety. Her awakening underscores the importance of understanding and supporting neurodiversity.

Carmel's honest sharing of her journey serves as a powerful reminder that embracing one's unique qualities and seeking self-discovery can lead to profound personal growth. Her experience encourages others to celebrate their individuality, neurodivergent or not.

In our ever-evolving world, conversations like these pave the way for greater acceptance and understanding of the beautifully diverse tapestry of human experiences.
