An Introduction to Self-Care


Embarking on a journey of self-care starts with understanding what self-care actually is. Recently, I took a weekend trip to Edinburgh, and the analogy that struck me was the oxygen mask safety demonstration on airplanes. It perfectly encapsulates the essence of self-care: ensuring you have your own oxygen before assisting others. Let's delve deeper and explore the layers of self-care.

The Oxygen Mask Analogy: In the safety demonstration on airplanes, we are reminded that, in case of cabin pressure loss, we should secure our own oxygen masks before aiding those around us. This analogy resonates with self-care, urging us to identify our needs and priorities first. Once we are in a position of strength, we can extend support to others without compromising our well-being.


The Overflowing Jug: Think of self-care as maintaining a jug that overflows with positivity and energy. While traditional self-care methods may involve periodic activities like facials or bubble baths, the key is to ensure your jug is consistently overflowing. By continuously replenishing your own energy, you can effortlessly share the excess with those around you, avoiding the pitfall of constantly refilling an empty vessel.


Sustainable Self-Care: Self-care is not a one-time event but an ongoing commitment to maintaining your well-being. It involves carving out time for yourself, setting boundaries, and understanding your needs and values. Superficial self-care activities, such as spa days or shopping, are helpful, but the deeper layers involve saying no when necessary, establishing boundaries, and aligning your life with your priorities & values.


Surface Level vs. Deeper Self-Care: While activities like enjoying a cup of coffee in solitude contribute to surface-level self-care, there's a deeper layer that involves setting boundaries, saying no, and engaging in meaningful activities aligned with your passions. Hobbies, in particular, offer a therapeutic escape, allowing you to immerse yourself in the present moment and find solace in creativity or curiosity.


Conclusion

As we approach the festive season and navigate gatherings that may be emotionally taxing, it becomes even more crucial to prioritize self-care. In self-care lies the essence of understanding our needs, setting boundaries, and engaging in activities that bring genuine joy. So, let's adopt the oxygen mask approach to self-care, ensuring that we are not just filling our cups but maintaining an overflowing jug that can sustain us and uplift those around us.
